Dogs can continue heading into a popular coffee shop – after bosses performed a U-turn on banning pooches.
Owners had previously been able to walk inside Alsager’s Costa Coffee branch with the four-legged companions when ordering take away beverages.
But following complaints from customers the Sandbach Road South business announced that dogs could no longer head inside.
Manager Oliver Manifold had posted Facebook to explain the stance where he offered his apologies to owners and said it came following complaints. He added in the post: “I would like to thank all dog walkers of Alsager for showing their support and upholding such a great relationship with both myself and the team and understanding that these decisions are not within our control.
“We at Alsager will do what’s in our power to keep our relationship with all our four-legged customers and their owners and apologise for any inconvenience.”
However after being contacted by StokeonTrentLive over the new policy Costa, which has branches across North Staffordshire and South Cheshire, confirmed ‘well behaved dogs’ could continue to go inside.
Jim Smith, operations director from Sim Trava, the franchise partner of Costa Coffee Alsager, said: “Following a review of Costa Coffee’s dog policy in Alsager, I can confirm that we will happily welcome well-behaved dogs in store.
“Whilst this is not aligned to Costa Coffee’s policy, to support Ollie and the team we want to accommodate the local community, including their love of dogs. In order to ensure good hygiene and a welcoming environment for all customers, dogs will be allowed in certain areas in the store only.”
Some residents in the town had been left disappointed by the new policy before the U-turn.
Sarah Foster, of Alsager, said: “Owners should be able to take their dogs with them.
“I know there’s always hygiene reasons to consider but I don’t see a problem with it. I always felt comfortable to take mine there.”
Michelle Bates, also from Alsager said: “Alsager is a huge community of dog lovers. There are lots of people who live in the area who go out for a walk with their dogs and enjoy sitting down for a drink afterwards.
But Andrea Allman, who also lives in the town, said: “It all depends on the behaviour of the dog. There are seats outside and that seems more acceptable.
“I don’t take my dog into cafés and I know exactly how they would behave, with others dogs you never know.”
