A Fort Smith man on Tuesday told police he was shot in the chest while walking his dog.

The man, who medical personnel at Sparks Medical Center confirmed had a gunshot wound to his lower chest area and several marks that appeared to be dog bites, told police he was walking with his girlfriend around noon Tuesday in the 1200 block of South W Street when a bigger dog attacked his dog. He said he was shot when he tried to break up the dog fight, according to the incident report.

The report did not list any suspects or state if the man knew who may have shot him.

An Emergency Room employee told police Cpl. Kevin Chitwood someone pulled up to the facility and dropped off the man, who was having trouble breathing. Chitwood in the report said he would get a video copy of the man being dropped off, the report states.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Police Department at (479) 709-5100.
